Welcome to the Coven: Organising Feminist Activism in the Digital Age
20 June 2019
In the era of social media and mobile technology, new and revamped forms of activism have emerged. In particular, digital feminist activism has taken to the global stage, with campaigns such as #MeToo, SlutWalk and #TakeDownJulienBlanc, spreading virally with the help of digital networks. Easily accessible digital technology has brought with it new capabilities and has empowered a wider range of people’s voices. However, new challenges and concerns have also arisen such as trolling and online harassment. In this talk, digital media and feminist researcher Verity Trott explores the challenges of organising and doing feminism in the digital age. She explores the creative tactics feminist activists use to develop campaigns that are personalisable, spreadable, and relatable. She also touches on the intersectional concerns and the lateral violence that exist within the movement.
Verity Trott is a Lecturer in digital media research at Monash University. Her research looks at the social, political and cultural implications of digital technology from a feminist and intersectional lens.
